Ava's Thoughts - Victory Gardens

April 15, 2020

Dear Diary,

When I think about victory gardens, I immediately think of Molly, an American Girl Doll character. Others may recall the world wars, where all of the posters read, "We need YOU" or "Your victory garden counts more than ever!" In the different wars, farmers and agricultural workers had to fight in the infantry, so fresh food wasn't grown as often. Since fresh vegetables weren't being grown and everything else was being rationed, victory gardens were the way families stayed afloat during those harsh times.

Victory gardens were a unified act that brought many different groups of people together, creating a community and a family built of struggles. Those who had victory gardens grew a diverse crop, including beans, beets, cabbage, carrots, kale, kohlrabi, lettuce, peas, tomatoes, turnips, squash, and Swiss chard. Most of these plants were good to can and freeze, presenting enough food to last a couple of weeks or even months.

They provided for many families in a time of weakness and hardship. Now, as we start to deal with the many different issues heading our way, a victory garden may be just what we need. There is no promise that food will always be plentiful or that our government will be able to take care of us forever. Those are more reasons why we need to rally around each other and grow closer in our community as we grow in our victory garden.

Until the next time,

Ava
